Photograph snapped from inside the Casparis Mines and toward some autumn colored trees outside the tunnel openings. The blue limestone mine closed operation in the early 1950s, but the subterranean feature still exists despite several small collapses. The three openings stand at an impressive forty feet in height and roughly twenty-five feet in width, with a fourth smaller opening only about twenty feet high. Various estimates exist on to how far the mines go back ranging from a quarter of a mile to two miles. Many fables surround the mine ranging from having a back entrance to being an emergency bomb shelter for the President of the United States to hide in case of nuclear war. The rock from the mine was used in many Pittsburgh roadways, including Grant Street. |
