Photograph taken from the base of the Washington Rocks outcropping. On May 28, 1754, an envoy of French under the command of Jumonville, who were camped at the base of the rocks, were attacked by colonials and Indians led by the 22 year old George Washington. Washington’s men took position on top of this formidable rock outcropping. The skirmish that took place here ignited the world in war for seven years, known in America as the French and Indian War. |
