Nearly two days following a major winter storm localized only to the ridge tops, elevations below 1500 feet only had rain, shows trees in near collapse from the weight of an inch coating of frozen rain and more than a foot of heavy wet snow. The dynamics of the storm were strange for the northern portions of Laurel Ridge had a long period of freezing rain, while the southern experienced more snow and little freezing rain. In the picture, one can ascertain the damage done to the trees by this storm, with a non-moving windmill straddling the background on Laurel Ridge’s summit. While this photo was taken, sounds of crashing tree limbs could be heard in almost every direction, for the wind had just begun to pick up in earnest. The winter of 2002-2003 would have tested any individual living along the ridge tops for this storm was but an early omen of the rough times they had ahead. |
