Come & Mill About Perryopolis
by Ruth Shield, Perryopolis Historical Society

The Perryopolis Area Heritage Society was formed in 1988 to continue the work begun by the Perryopolis Historical Society. Since then we have rebuilt the foundation of Washington's Grist Mill, restored the distillery to it's Whiskey Rebellion Era condition, purchased Mary Fuller Frazier's birthplace and the Old State Bank, and fenced in the grounds of the Grist Mill Park.

Our Pioneer Days Festival is held to raise money needed to restore Washington's Mill to it's 1774 glory when it was said to be the best and busiest grist mill west of the Alleghenies.

The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania laid the cornerstone of the mill on October 3, 1992 in Washington's honor. George Washington was the Worshipful Master of the New Alexandria Lodge No. 22 in Virginia when he took office as the President of the United States.

Our goal is to maintain the cultural heritage, art and craft of our pioneer forefathers and to teach it to our children so that they may pass it on to the future.
