Uniontown - Dunbar - Smithfield - Pt. Marion

The Sheepskin Trail - Here We Come!

As reported in the Yough Trail news section, the Sheepskin Trail (named after the many sheep herds that interrupted railroad movements in the early 1900's on that line), feasibility study is in the RFP process through a 30,000 dollar state grant with local matching funds which will provide the necessary study for this Trail to proceed. Trail Director McKinley is optimistic as are officials from the Fayette County's Planning Department. "The old Pennsylvania Railroad right-of-way is intact in most sections, which could lead to rapid Trail construction similar to the 5 Star Trail in Greensburg" says Trail Director McKinley. "This 32 mile trail with its access point above Connellsville, would follow the mountain range from Dunbar and the former Western Maryland Railroad Yards at BO West, go behind Meason House (A National Landmark), through downtown Uniontown, and has potential access to Choaf (an intact mining and coke town complex). It would then proceed to Smithfield, ending at Point Marion on the Mon River," says Trail Director McKinley.
